Our classrooms

Little Redwoods School follows a Reggio-inspired emergent curriculum, meaning learning experiences grow from the children’s interests, questions, and discoveries. We embrace multiple intelligences, which nurture the whole child and meet all developmental domains.

To ensure the highest quality of care and support for each child’s developmental needs, we strive to exceed licensing standards, whenever possible, regarding adult-to-child ratios—specifically, 1:3 for infants, 1:4 for toddlers, and 1:6 for preschoolers, reflecting what we believe to be best practice. The school is organized into three main classrooms: Roots, Sprouts and The Grove.

Roots

Infants (3 - 24 months)

Infants grow their roots through warm, responsive care that builds a foundation of trust and security. Through songs, simple signs, and gentle conversation, infants begin to discover the power of communication. Their senses come alive as they explore textures, sounds, and movement, laying the groundwork for strong brains and healthy bodies.

All infant care in our classroom is individualized and on demand. We respond to each child’s cues for feeding, diapering, rest, and comfort, rather than following a strict schedule. For our older infants, we begin preparing for the toddler classroom by gradually weaving in parts of the toddler routine. All opportunities are introduced at each child’s pace, fostering confidence and independence while keeping daily care predictable and comforting. This gentle, relationship-based approach helps infants feel secure in their current environment while easing the transition to the toddler classroom.

Sprouts

Toddlers (18 -36 months)

Toddlers’ sprouting curiosity is fulfilled through playful discovery and joyful repetition. They develop independence by practicing self-help skills, building language through parallel play, and uncovering cause-and-effect through hands-on sensory adventures. Simple routines and clear boundaries provide the security toddlers need to navigate their world confidently.

The Grove

Preschool (2.5 - 5 years)

Preschoolers engage in collaborative learning within their grove of peers, discovering the joy of growing together. They thrive in a vibrant balance of play and purposeful structure, exploring multiple intelligences. Creativity blooms, critical thinking takes root, and essential social-emotional skills become second nature, preparing them confidently for kindergarten. Preschool children are split into the following smaller groups based on development during project-based learning time:

Seedlings Group (Young): Seedlings learn to participate in group settings by expanding their attention, engaging with others, and exploring a variety of new experiences.

Saplings Group (Mid): Saplings learn to explore and experiment, growing independence and creativity as they discover new ways to solve problems together.

Redwoods Group (TK):  Redwoods learn to confidently step into leadership by applying critical thinking, social-emotional awareness, and creative expression, fully ready to embrace all that kindergarten has to offer.
